"The death of my husband...at San Francisco...renders it expedient that I should visit California during the coming season. Having a desire to accomplish some greater good...believing that the presence of women would be one of the surest checks upon many of the evils that are apprehended there...a plan for organizing a party of such persons to emigrate to that country." Eliza Farnham then goes on to describe the company of women, not under twenty-five years of age, contributing two hundred and fifty dollars to and having the ability to enter some occupation upon arrival in California. The party shall also include six or eight respectable married men and their families. The New York built Packet Ship Angelique will be ready to sail from New York about the 12th or 15th of April., Vignette at head of title: a wood engraving of a sailing ship., Among the people undersigning this undertaking were: Hon. H. Greeley, W.C. Bryant, Esq. and the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher.

For the people. - Tickets only $1 each. 80,000 sold., Notice of the sale of Jones' Pantoscope..."A magnificent Painting by the first artist, from 1500 daguerreotypes,...it is confidently estimated that the enterprise will be completed by the Fourth of July next.", Advertised widely in New York and other seaboard cities during 1853 and 1854...Americans could see realistic views of the new frontier. The paintings were raffled off by lottery in March 1854. Jones commissioned artists to use the daguerreotype scenes chosen for his project as models for painting large scenes on canvas for his lecture series, "The Pantoscope of California." Cf. Rinhart.
