Statements presented by Hirokichi Hayashi at a general meeting of the California Flower Market, which include what Hayashi describes as his personal view of issues affecting the market. Hayashi writes that the flower market lease was set to expire in March 1934. Two options being considered were: 1) To work with the Italians to build a new market by investing $150,000 in a perpetual lease of a market space at Harrison and 8th Streets, or 2) rent reduction of 30.5% to stay in the current market. Although it was considered favorable to work with Italians on market issues, Hayashi writes that investing a large amount of capital and building a large market should be considered, and that to an unprecedented depression, risky investments were uncertain. Hayashi concludes: It is good to work with Italians on market issues, but we should reconsider investing a large amount of capital and building a large market at this point. Since we are currently in a period of an unprecedented recession, uncertain investments are risky.
