DEFEND CIVIL RIGHTS = BOYCOTT ALL ORANGE JUICE

Civil rights advocates in the Bay Area recently formed the Humans Under Attack Committee (HUAC) in response to Co-op's refusal to remove Florida orange juice products from its shelves in protest of the continuing hate campaign led by Anita Bryant, public spokesperson for the Florida Citrus Commission.

HUAC IS ASKING ALL CO-OP MEMBERS AND CUSTOMERS TO JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN AGAINST HATEMONGERS BACKED BY THE FLORIDA CITRUS COMMISSION BY REFUSING TO BUY ANY ORANGE JUICE PRODUCTS.

History

A group of right-wing extremists in Miami, led by Anita Bryant, has organized a campaign to wipe out the recently passed law that includes gay people in Dade County's ordinance banning discrimination against minorities in jobs, housing, and services. This group has connections with anti-ERA forces and leftovers from Nixon's political machine. It not only wants to destroy gay people's human rights, but has contempt for the rights of anyone who won't conform to its narrow religious doctrine. Anita Bryant continues to make outrageous hate statements in public forums across the country, accusing gay men and lesbians of such acts as causing the California drought and perverting America’s youth, equating gay people with murderers and decrying civil rights laws. Because of her public position, she has gained nationwide attention and support from ) vicious right-wing supporters. If her tactics are successful in Dade County, it will mark the start of a national campaign against gay people. This is not only a threat to gay people everywhere, but a campaign like this will give added momentum to groups attacking the rights of women, black people, religious minorities . . . who will be the next target?

In periods of economic crisis, right-wing groups have always tried to set up minorities as scapecoats, to take people's minds off real issues like inflation and unemployment. We've got to nip this hate campaign in the bud, before it grows into a national disease.

One way we can start is to boycott Florida citrus products. Much of Anita Bryant's $500,000 annual income comes from her ads for the Florida Citrus Commission. A drop in orange juice sales will put pressure on the financiers of her hate campaign and make a strong statement in defense of human rights.

Unfortunately, although the Co-op Board of Directors expressed sympathy for the request of gay men and lesbians to remove all orange juice products from Co-op shelves, the Board voted against removing these products from Co-op shelves on economic grounds. HUAC, along with many other Bay Area civil rights groups, feels strongly that Co-op's refusal to support minority rights in this case represents a dangerous and irresponsible violation of their stated principles.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

HUAC is asking all Co-op Members and customers to join the campaign to defend the civil rights of minority people by boycotting all orange juice products. Almost all bottled, canned, and frozen orange juice sold in California is made from Florida oranges. No orange juice is safe to buy. And no minority is safe from right-wing oppression. You can make your statement in defense of civil rights by refusing to buy orange juice.

You can also:
