`Many Japanese families are now
feeling the inevitable inconvenien-
ces and persecutions which must be
faced by all nationals of enemy
countries sooner or later. Hundreds
have been apprehended in the coast-
al area and more recently in Sa-
cramento.
Despite the contraband orders, it
seems that the aliens are in posses-
sion of many prohibited goods. Why?
The majority of aliens, having been
residents in one spot from 20 to 50
years, have accumulated many odds |
and forgotten. Thus when they do
and ends which they have stored
take place some contraband is
bound to be uncovered.
Also there seem to be quite a few |
nisei who kept such contraband as
.22 bullets, flashlights and cameras
lying around in their rooms and
drawers, consequently causing their
alien parents much embarrassment
and hardship, They are suffering
enough, so let's be more careful and
check our belongings once more.
Nisei Responsibility
The nisei should assume the res-
ponsibility of clearing the homes of
contraband and seeing to it that all
ill-founded rumors be stilled. Again
it is their duty to report all acts or
talks of a suspicious nature to the
proper authorities for it is due to |
the failure on the part of any Ja- |
panese to report anything whatso- |
ever that these raids. are being |
undertaken to uncover those dis- |
loyal to the United States.
Perhaps it is difficult to report the |
actions of a friend or perhaps there |
is nothing to report. However, it is |
our duty as loyal Americans to go
out of our way to unearth and re-
port those who are suspicious.
Otherwise, thousands would have
to suffer the hardships brought
about by the actions of a few.
Let's not kid ourselves. We may
boast of our American citizenship,
but really we're not much better
off than the aliens for physically
we are all alike and in the eyes of
our fellow Americans we're just as
much under suspicion as the issei
are. Let's bear the burden and clear
the status of our much. ballyhooed
loyalty to the United States.
